Contractors in Savannah

Georgia requires a state license for residential and general contractors on any project over $2,500, issued by the State Licensing Board for Residential and General Contractors under the Secretary of State. Electrical, plumbing, HVAC (conditioned air) and low voltage work is licensed separately by the Construction Industry Licensing Board. Trades such as roofing, painting and flooring have no state license in Georgia, only a local business license, so ask those pros for insurance instead.

Building permits for Savannah, in Chatham County, come from the city or county building department, and the licensed contractor normally pulls them. Ask for a certificate of insurance (general liability, plus workers' compensation if the crew has three or more employees), get the scope and price in writing, and collect lien waivers as you pay: a Georgia contractor or subcontractor can file a lien within 90 days of their last work.
